How to write a listing: step-by-step guide
Most listings get lost among hundreds of others — not because the offer is bad, but because they are poorly written. A good listing is a learnable skill. Here is the complete guide.

How to write a listing that actually sells?
A successful listing consists of four key elements. If any is missing, the buyer simply moves on.
- 01
Precise title
First contact with the buyer. The title must answer the question "what is it and why should I care" in less than a second.
- 02
Description that sells
Facts, benefits and context. The buyer wants to know the condition, specs and reason for selling — not just "selling because I don't need it".
- 03
Quality photos
Listings with photos get several times more responses. A photo speaks more than a hundred words and builds trust.
- 04
Clear call to action
Tell the buyer exactly what to do: call, send a message, come to see. Leave nothing to chance.
Step 1 – Write a precise title
What belongs in the title
A good title contains maximum information in minimum space:
- ✓Exact product name or category
- ✓Condition (new, like new, used, for repair)
- ✓Key feature that will distinguish your listing (size, model, year)
- ✓Price — optional, but increases click-through rate
Example: "iPhone 14 Pro, 256 GB, like new, 700 €"
What does not belong in the title
These mistakes cost you clicks and credibility:
- ✗General words: "selling stuff", "goods", "various"
- ✗Exclamation marks and CAPS LOCK: SUPER OFFER!!!
- ✗Empty phrases: "contact me", "interesting price"
- ✗Duplicate words that waste space: "Selling for sale..."
Examples of good and bad titles
| Bad title | Good title |
|---|---|
| Selling stuff | IKEA baby cot, 0–3 years, with mattress, 45 € |
| SUPER OFFER!!! | Zara winter jacket, size M, worn once, 25 € |
| Car for sale | VW Golf 7, 2019, 1.6 TDI, 120,000 km, service history |
Step 2 – Identify your target audience
Before you start writing the description, ask yourself: who will read my listing? A bargain hunter looking for the lowest price? A parent looking for safe baby equipment? A company looking for specific equipment?
Adapt the tone and content accordingly:
Buyer looking for a bargain
Emphasize price, condition and comparison with new price. "Bought for 200 €, selling for 60 €."
Buyer looking for specific specs
Include all technical details. Model, year, dimensions, power — the more precise, the better.
Tenant or job seeker
Describe the benefits and conditions. Location, public transport access, what is included in the price.
Step 3 – Write a description that sells
Description structure: facts → benefits → emotion
The best descriptions work in three layers:
- 1Facts – What you are selling, condition, specs, dimensions, year, model.
- 2Benefits – Why it is good. What the buyer gets. Comparison with new price.
- 3Emotion – Visualization of use. "Perfect for a small apartment", "Ideal as a gift".
What information must not be missing
- ▸Condition of the item (new, used, for repair)
- ▸Technical specs or dimensions
- ▸Reason for selling — increases credibility
- ▸Delivery method (in person, courier, postal service)
- ▸Price (at least approximate)
- ▸Contact info or instructions on how to get in touch
How long should the text be
Length depends on the category. A short description seems unreliable, too long a one puts people off.
| Regular goods | 80 – 150 words |
| Cars, equipment | 200 – 350 words |
| Real estate | 200 – 400 words |
| Job listings | 150 – 300 words |
What to avoid
- ✗Empty phrases: "great condition", "great deal", "price negotiable" without a number
- ✗Clichés: "selling because I don't need it" without further context
- ✗Too emotional language: "amazing!!!", "you must have!!!"
- ✗Grammar mistakes — reduce credibility and look unprofessional
Step 4 – Add quality photos
Photos are the first thing a buyer looks at — even before reading a single word of the description.
How many photos to add
The recommended minimum is 3–5 photos, ideally 8–10. The more expensive the item, the more photos are worth adding.
On ozna.sk you can add up to 60 photos per listing — far more than most platforms allow. More photos = more buyer trust = more responses.
How many photos to add? Read the detailed guide →How to take photos correctly
- ✓Take photos in natural daylight or good artificial lighting
- ✓Clean, simple background — floor, wall, neutral surface
- ✓Different angles: front, side, back, detail
- ✓Photograph any defects or damage — it builds credibility
- ✓Photos should match reality — no excessive filters

Most common photography mistakes
- ✗Dark or blurry photos
- ✗Mirror selfie with visible camera
- ✗Only one photo of the item from one angle
- ✗Clutter in the background distracts from the item
Step 5 – Add a call to action (CTA)
A call to action tells the buyer exactly what to do. Without it, many people simply leave, even though they might be interested.
CTA examples for different types of listings
Call or send a message — I will reply within an hour.
Contact me to arrange a viewing. Available on weekdays from 4 PM.
Send your CV by email or call — we are happy to train you.
Send a message, we will arrange pickup. Possible on weekends too.
Tip: Specify a specific time or method of contact. The more specific, the more responses you will get.
Step 6 – Optimize your listing for search
Buyers search for listings through search engines and directly on the portal. A few simple steps will increase the chance that your listing will be found.
Keywords in the title and text
Use words that the buyer would type into a search engine. For example: "baby stroller" instead of just "stroller"; "women's winter jacket size M" instead of "clothing".
Correct category
Listings in the wrong category have significantly lower visibility. Choose the category where your customers would look — not the one that seems closest to you.
Basic word forms (nominative case for SEO)
Search engines index base word forms better. Instead of "selling working washing machine" use "washing machine" in the title — that form is searched most often.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a listing description be?+
For regular goods 80–150 words is enough. For cars, furniture and real estate we recommend 200–400 words with precise specifications. A short description seems unreliable, too long a one tires the reader.
Do I need to include a price?+
Yes. Listings without a price get significantly fewer responses. Even if you are willing to negotiate, include at least an approximate price — for example, "700 €, open to offers".
How many photos should I add?+
Minimum 3–5, ideally 8–10. The more expensive the item, the more photos. Always add detailed photos of the condition and any defects — they build trust and filter out unnecessary questions.
Can I copy a description from another seller?+
We do not recommend it. An original description is ranked better by algorithms, and experienced buyers easily spot generic text. Write in your own words — even a short sincere description is better than a copied one.
What to do when a listing gets no responses?+
Start by checking three things: the title, price and photos — in 90% of cases the problem is there. Compare your price with 3–5 similar listings on ozna.sk. If the price looks right, try rewriting the title or adding more photos. Timing matters too — listings published Monday through Wednesday morning get noticeably more views than weekend posts. If responses still do not come after editing, try boosting — your listing moves to the top of its category and gets seen first.
How to write a listing for renting an apartment?+
Include: location, area, floor, furnishings, what is included in the price, requirements for the tenant, deposit amount and move-in date. Add bright photos of every room including the bathroom and kitchen.
A good listing is not a talent — it is 15 minutes of extra work. A clear title, honest description, bright photos and a specific call to action. That is all. Sellers who follow these four rules get responses faster and sell at higher prices — not because they have better items, but because they present them better.
