Free items — pick up only: how it works and where to post
Want to get rid of your old sofa but hate the idea of throwing it away? Or looking for affordable furniture for a new flat? In this article you will find everything about giving items away for free pick-up — from where to post to tips on finding a taker quickly.
What does "pick up only" mean?
"Pick up only" means the owner offers the item completely free of charge. The only condition is that the interested party comes in person and collects it at their own expense. No money is exchanged.
Unlike a regular second-hand sale, there is no price — the item is given without financial compensation. The recipient "pays" only with their time and transport.
Note the difference from "pay postage": with pick-up only, the recipient must come in person and collect the item. With "pay postage", the sender ships the item and the recipient pays the delivery cost.

How to write a good free pick-up listing
A quality listing determines whether someone responds within an hour or never. Here are four steps that increase your chance of a quick pick-up.
- 1
Photos — the foundation of a successful listing
Add at least 2–3 photos in daylight. Show visible damage — honesty builds trust. For furniture, photograph both assembled and disassembled.
- 2
Dimensions and actual condition
For furniture, always include dimensions: height × width × depth in centimetres. Describe the real condition — scratches, damage, age. The recipient will see it anyway when picking up.
- 3
Availability and pick-up conditions
State when someone can come (days, hours), floor number and whether there is a lift. Write how many people are needed for heavy furniture and whether you can help carry it out.
- 4
Exact location
State at least the district or street. People search by proximity — the more specific, the more interested parties.

Why give items away for free? The environmental angle
Extending the product lifecycle — every donated item is one less in landfill.
Reducing waste — Slovakia produces nearly 500 kg of mixed waste per person per year. Free pick-up is one of the simplest ways to reduce this volume.
Local community — neighbourly help and social solidarity, when unwanted items find a new home.
Circular economy — giving things away is the simplest form of the circular economy available to everyone, with no registration or fees.
Safety when handing over items — what to watch out for
- Never send money in advance — legitimate free pick-up is always free of charge. If someone asks for payment "to reserve" the item, it is a scam.
- Meet at the building entrance — not inside the flat — until the person has been verified.
- Do not leave strangers in your home unsupervised.
- Report suspicious listings to the portal administrator.
- For large furniture, agree on an exact time and confirm it the day before — this reduces no-shows.
Frequently asked questions
Is free pick-up really free?+
Yes — the owner receives no money. The recipient "pays" only with their effort: they come to collect the item and transport it at their own expense. No financial transaction takes place.
Can I give away a car for free pick-up?+
Yes, the Cars category exists on ozna.sk. However, transferring a vehicle requires an official re-registration at the Traffic Inspectorate — free pick-up does not handle the legal transfer of ownership.
What if the person does not show up at the agreed time?+
Re-post the listing or mark it as available. We recommend confirming the time the day before pick-up and having a backup contact — demand for popular listings is usually high.
How long until someone responds?+
For furniture in Bratislava, usually a few hours. In smaller towns, 1–3 days. The key is a quality photo and accurate description.
Is there a mobile app for ozna.sk?+
Yes — the mobile version of ozna.sk works on any device. Post and manage your listings directly from your smartphone.
Can I give something away without a car?+
Yes — you can also post "pay postage" listings, which is an alternative for smaller items. For large furniture, physical pick-up is a prerequisite.
