When to switch to winter tyres

Slovak law sets no fixed date. Winter tyres (marked M+S or 3PMSF, tread at least 3 mm) are mandatory when there is compacted snow, ice or frost on the road — or when that can be expected from the weather. Driving on summer tyres in winter conditions risks a fine, and your insurer can reduce a claim payout after an accident.

The rule of thumb Switch when daytime temperatures stay below 7 °C — usually from mid-October to Easter. Don’t wait for the first snow: that’s when tyre shops have the longest queues and bookings run two weeks out.

Lorries over 3.5 t must have winter tyres from 15 November to 31 March regardless of the weather.

The winter tyre requirement is set by § 38 of Act No. 8/2009 Coll. on road traffic (zákon o cestnej premávke) — full text on Slov-Lex.

A quick pre-season check

  • Tread depth — below 4 mm consider new winter tyres, below 3 mm they are no longer legal.
  • Tyre age — after 6–8 years the rubber hardens and loses grip even with enough tread (the date is in the DOT code on the sidewall).
  • Even wear — uneven wear means wrong alignment or pressure; sort it out at the change.

How much a tyre change and storage costs in Bratislava (2026)

The shop gives an exact price based on wheel diameter, vehicle type and whether your tyres are on rims or not. Below are rough ranges from Bratislava tyre shop price lists.

ServiceApprox., € (set)
Wheel swap, tyres on rims (off + on the car)15–30
Tyre change off the rim + balancing, R14–1740–60
Tyre change off the rim + balancing, R18–20 / SUV / van60–110
Balancing only, per wheel / per set5–8 / 20–35
Tyre storage (tyre hotel), 1 season30–45
Puncture repair (1 wheel)from 10–20
Nitrogen inflation (set)5–10
Wheel alignment check and adjustmentfrom 40–70

Ranges are approximate, checked against Bratislava tyre shop price lists in September 2026. A “set” price = 4 wheels. Balancing is included in “tyre change off the rim”; for a wheel swap it is extra.

Tyre storage (tyre hotel)

For €30–45 a season the shop stores your second set in controlled conditions and texts you before the season. Worth it if you have no dry, dark cellar — tyres kept on a balcony or near heating age fast. Many tyre shops give customers who store with them a fixed “no queue” booking slot.

Tyre change vs wheel swap — the difference

Two similar terms, but different work and a different price. Pick the service in the listing or when booking based on what you have.

Wheel swap (two sets on rims)

The shop just takes the four wheels off the car and fits the second set — summer off, winter on. Fast (15–20 minutes), cheap (€15–30 a set). Balancing isn’t required every swap, but once a year or if you feel vibration is advisable.

Tyre change (one set of rims, you change the rubber)

The shop pulls the summer tyre off the rim, fits the winter one on the same rim and balances the wheel. More work, more expensive (€40–110 a set by diameter). Done when you have no second rims — usually cheaper than buying a second set of rims if you only change tyres once or twice a year.

What pays off If you drive a lot and change every year, a second set of steel rims (often €150–250) pays for itself in 2–3 seasons through the cheaper swap and less bead wear on the tyres.

What else a tyre shop can do

Most Bratislava tyre shops do more than a changeover. If you are going anyway, it helps to know in advance what else you can sort out in one place — and what only some shops offer.

Puncture repair

Plugging a tread puncture with a cord or an inside patch. Sidewall cuts and damage near the edge cannot be repaired — you need a new tyre.

Wheel balancing

Removing vibration with weights. Part of a tyre change off the rim; on its own when the steering wheel shakes at speed.

Wheel alignment (3D)

Checking and setting toe and camber. Fixes uneven wear and the car pulling to one side. Not every tyre shop has it.

Rim straightening and refurbishment

Straightening buckled steel and alloy rims, repainting if needed. Cheaper than a new rim after a kerb hit.

Valves and pressure sensors (TPMS)

Replacing rubber valves during the change, servicing and relearning the pressure sensors most cars built after 2014 have.

Tyre sales and fitting

New and used tyres, advice on size and brand, fitting and balancing right there.

Motorcycle, trailer and equipment wheels

Some shops also handle scooters, motorcycles, trailers and garden equipment — check by phone first.

Mobile tyre service

A changeover or puncture repair at your home, workplace or roadside. More expensive than a shop, but saves the trip and the wait.

Seasonal storage of the second set (tyre hotel) is offered by most tyre shops too — prices are in the “How much it costs” section above.

How to choose a tyre shop

Most Bratislava tyre shops do a comparable job on the change itself. The difference is in booking lead time, the price of extra work, and whether they tell you about a problem before it shows up on the road.

  • The price per set and for extras (valves, weights, old tyre disposal) is stated upfront — not “come in and we’ll see”.
  • A location and opening hours that suit you — a shop near home or work saves the most time in season. Some Bratislava shops also open weekends or 24/7.
  • The option to book online or by phone for a specific time. “No booking” in October means an hour’s wait.
  • A check of tread, pressure, valves and brake condition as part of the change — a good shop does this and flags issues.
  • Experience with your wheel type — low-profile, run-flat, large diameters and alloy rims need careful mounting.
  • A storage option if you have nowhere to keep the second set.
  • A real address and reviews (Google, Firmy.sk), not just a phone number in the listing.

FAQ

When do you have to switch to winter tyres in Slovakia?+

The law sets no date — winter tyres are mandatory when there is snow, ice or frost on the road, or that can be expected. In practice, switch when daytime temperatures stay below 7 °C, usually from mid-October. Lorries over 3.5 t must run winter tyres from 15 November to 31 March.

How much does a tyre change cost in Bratislava?+

A wheel swap with tyres on rims is roughly €15–30 a set. A tyre change off the rim with balancing is about €40–60 for R14–17 diameters and €60–110 for R18–20, SUVs and vans. The shop sets the exact price by your wheels and vehicle.

What’s the difference between a tyre change and a wheel swap?+

A swap replaces whole wheels when you have two sets on rims — fast and cheap. A change means pulling a tyre off the rim and fitting another on the same rim with balancing — more work and more expensive. A swap is for when winter and summer tyres are each on their own rims.

How much does tyre storage cost per season?+

A tyre hotel in Bratislava is roughly €30–45 for one season per set, by wheel diameter. That covers controlled storage and a pre-season reminder; some shops add a priority change booking.

Do you need to book ahead or can you just turn up?+

Off-season you can usually turn up. At the peak (late October–November and March–April) bookings run two weeks out and turning up means an hour or more of waiting. Book ahead.

Is balancing needed at every tyre change?+

For a tyre change off the rim, yes — it’s part of the service. For a full wheel swap, balancing once a year or when you feel vibration in the steering wheel at speed is enough.
