Car polishing (leštenie) - prices, headlights and what polishing really removes

Dull paint, fine scratches from the car wash or yellowed headlights? Polishing - in Slovak leštenie - brings the shine back, but not everything can be polished out. Here are indicative polishing prices in Slovakia for 2026, the difference between one-step and multi-step polishing, wax, sealant and ceramic, headlight polishing and how to polish a car at home.

Car polishing (leštenie) - prices, headlights and what polishing really removes

Types of car polishing

Polishing removes a thin layer of clear coat with a polishing compound so the surface becomes smooth and reflects light. The more steps, the more scratches disappear - but the more paint is removed and the more it costs.

One-step polish

What it does
One compound and one pad, removes roughly 50-70% of fine scratches and restores gloss
When it fits
Ordinary car, dull paint, before selling

Multi-step polish (paint correction)

What it does
A cutting and then a finishing compound, removes 80-99% of scratches and holograms
When it fits
Dark paint, more expensive car, before a ceramic coating

Paint protection

What it does
Wax, sealant or ceramic - protects the polished paint and makes the gloss last
When it fits
Always after polishing, otherwise the shine fades quickly

How much does car polishing cost in Slovakia in 2026

Prices depend on the size of the car, the paint condition and the studio. Cheap deals usually mean a hand-applied wax or polishing one panel, not machine polishing the whole car.

ServiceIndicative price
Hand wax without polishing€30-80
One-step polish of the whole car€150-450
Two-step polish of the whole car€250-600
Multi-step paint correction€550-800 and more
Headlight polishing (1 headlight)€25-50
Headlight polishing with a protective coat (1 headlight)€50-75
Sealant (protection for about 6 months)€50-100
Carnauba wax€100-200
Ceramic coating including preparation€500-1,500
SUV, estate, van (surcharge)+20-30%

What affects the price

The size of the car, the colour (dark paint shows every scratch), how hard the clear coat is, the number of steps, whether plastics and trims are included, and whether the price includes VAT - studios often quote it without.

Tip: a reliable studio measures the paint thickness before polishing and shows you what can and can't be removed. Be careful if someone promises "100% of scratches gone" without seeing the car.

What polishing removes - and what it doesn't

A simple test: run your fingernail across the scratch. If it doesn't catch, the scratch is in the clear coat and polishing usually removes it. If it catches, it goes deeper - into the colour or primer - and only a paint repair helps.

Removes

  • Fine scratches and swirl marks from car washes and brushes.
  • Holograms from bad polishing.
  • Dullness and oxidation of the paint.
  • Marks from insects, tree sap and bird droppings, if they haven't etched the paint yet.
  • Yellowing and haze on plastic headlights.

Doesn't remove

  • Deep scratches that catch your fingernail.
  • Stone chips.
  • Dents - these are fixed by paintless dent repair (PDR).
  • Rust and etched paint - these need repainting.
  • A colour mismatch after an old repair.

Wax, sealant or ceramic?

Polished paint without protection quickly turns dull again. Protection creates a layer on the paint that water runs off and dirt doesn't stick to.

Wax

How long it lasts
1-3 months
Indicative price
€30-200 (also DIY)
Who it suits
People who like to wax themselves, seasonally

Sealant (synthetic)

How long it lasts
About 6 months
Indicative price
€50-100
Who it suits
A sensible balance of price and durability

Ceramic

How long it lasts
2-5 years
Indicative price
€500-1,500 including polishing
Who it suits
A new or more expensive car you plan to keep for years

Headlight polishing

Plastic headlight lenses turn yellow and hazy over time - from UV light, stones and road salt. A hazy headlight is dimmer, scatters light and makes the car look older.

How it's done

Washing, masking the surrounding area, wet sanding with progressively finer paper, polishing with compound and finally a protective coat (clear coat or ceramic).

At home

A headlight restoration kit costs €15-30 and takes 1-2 hours. The result is good for light yellowing.

At a service

€25-50 per headlight, with a more durable protective coat €50-75. Worth it for heavy yellowing or if you don't want to risk scratching the lens.

Without protection they yellow again

If no protective coat is applied after polishing, headlights often yellow again within a year - so the last step matters most.

Headlights and the MOT (STK)

Very hazy headlights can be a problem at the technical inspection. If polishing doesn't help, the lens or the headlight needs replacing.

DIY polishing or a studio?

You can do a one-step polish and waxing yourself. For paint correction and dark colours the gap between an amateur and a studio is big.

How to polish a car at home - step by step

When polishing at home, preparation and patience make the difference. Start with a one-step compound and a dual-action polisher.

  1. Wash the car thoroughly

Use the two-bucket method so you don't scratch the paint before you even start polishing.

  2. Decontaminate the paint

Tar remover and iron fallout remover, then a clay bar. The paint should feel smooth as glass.

  3. Mask plastics and edges

Protect trims, rubber seals and plastics with masking tape.

  4. Do a test spot

Try the compound and pad on a small test square first, then move on to the whole car.

  5. Polish section by section

An area of about 50 × 50 cm, slow overlapping passes and light pressure with a dual-action polisher.

  6. Watch the edges

The paint is thinnest on edges and body lines - avoid them with the machine or go very gently.

  7. Wipe off the residue

Use a microfibre cloth and check the result under bright light.

  8. Apply protection

Wax or sealant according to the instructions. Without protection the shine fades quickly.

How to polish a car at home - step by step

Polishing before selling a car: is it worth it?

Partly. Glossy paint and clear headlights in the photos and at the viewing suggest the car has been looked after. Expensive treatments, however, won't pay off when you sell.

  • Worth it: headlight polishing (a few dozen euros, a visible difference) and a one-step polish or at least a wax.
  • Not worth it: ceramic and multi-step correction - buyers won't pay more for them.
  • Careful with repainting: a buyer will find a repainted panel with a paint thickness gauge and may see it as a sign of an accident. Fix small dents without paint (PDR) and mention bigger damage in the ad.
  • Take the photos for your ad after polishing and washing.

How to choose a polishing studio

  • Ask how many steps the polish includes and what percentage of scratches they promise to remove.
  • A reliable studio measures the paint thickness before polishing.
  • Check whether the price includes VAT and what it covers (wash, decontamination, protection, headlights).
  • Look at before-and-after photos under bright light - that's the only way to see holograms.
  • Ask how long the protection lasts and how to care for the paint afterwards.

Most common car polishing mistakes

  • Polishing an unwashed or contaminated car - dirt creates new scratches.
  • A rotary polisher in a beginner's hands - holograms and burnt-through paint.
  • Polishing edges and body lines - the paint is thinnest there.
  • Polishing in direct sunlight or on hot paint - the compound dries out.
  • No protection after polishing - the shine fades in a few weeks.
  • Machine polishing too often - each time removes clear coat.
  • Headlights polished without a protective coat - yellow again within a year.

FAQ about car polishing

How much does car polishing cost in Slovakia?

A one-step polish of the whole car costs roughly €150-450, a two-step polish €250-600 and a multi-step paint correction from €550. Add 20-30% for SUVs and estates. Studios often quote prices without VAT.

How much does headlight polishing cost?

At a service €25-50 per headlight, with a more durable protective coat €50-75. A DIY kit costs €15-30.

Does polishing remove scratches?

Fine scratches in the clear coat - yes. If a scratch catches your fingernail, it is deeper and polishing will only soften it - you need a paint repair.

How long does polishing last?

Without protection the shine fades in a few weeks. With wax it lasts 1-3 months, with a sealant about half a year, with ceramic 2-5 years.

Is wax or ceramic better?

Wax is cheap and you can apply it yourself, but it doesn't last long. Ceramic costs hundreds of euros but protects for years - worth it for a car you plan to keep.

Can I polish my car at home?

Yes. Beginners should use a dual-action polisher and a one-step compound. Washing, decontamination and care around the edges are key.

How often can a car be polished?

Machine polishing at most once a year, because each time it removes a thin layer of clear coat. You can wax every few months.

Is polishing worth it before selling a car?

Headlight polishing and a one-step polish - yes, the car looks better in photos and at the viewing. Ceramic and expensive correction won't pay off when you sell.

Why do headlights turn yellow and will they again after polishing?

UV light damages the plastic. If no protective coat is applied after polishing, headlights often turn yellow again within a year.

Will hazy headlights pass the technical inspection (STK)?

Very hazy headlights that are dim or scatter light can be a problem at the inspection. Polishing usually helps, otherwise the headlight needs replacing.

More car guides

Polishing brings back the shine and removes fine scratches, but it's not a miracle - anything that catches your fingernail needs a paint repair. For an ordinary car a one-step polish with wax or sealant is enough; for dark or expensive paint a studio is worth it. And if you're selling, start with the headlights - they cost the least and the difference is visible right away.
