How to sell a car in Slovakia fast and for a good price - step by step

Where to sell a car: 4 options compared

The first decision is who you sell to. The faster and easier, the less money. The comparison shows what convenience costs.

Private listing

How much you get
The most - full market price minus haggling
How fast
2–6 weeks, a few days at a good price
Your effort
Photos, ad, calls, viewings, contract, transfer
Best when
Ordinary car in good condition, no time pressure

Consignment sale at a dealer (komisný predaj)

How much you get
Market price minus 3–8% commission
How fast
3–10 weeks, no guaranteed date
Your effort
Low - the car sits at the dealer, money only after the sale
Best when
You do not want to deal with buyers and do not need the car

Instant buyout (výkup)

How much you get
15–30% less than a private sale
How fast
Often the same day
Your effort
Almost none - paperwork and transfer are done for you
Best when
You need the money now, older or damaged car

Trade-in (protiúčet)

How much you get
Similar to a buyout, the discount is often hidden in the price of the new car
How fast
When buying another car
Your effort
None
Best when
You are buying from a dealer and want it all in one go
Tip: even if you sell privately, get an instant buyout offer. It is your floor - there is no point going below it in a private sale.

Selling a car step by step

This is what a private car sale looks like from the first photo to handing over the keys. We have a detailed guide for each step.

  1. Get the documents ready

Find the registration certificate (osvedčenie o evidencii) part I and II, service book, repair invoices, roadworthiness (STK) and emissions (EK) reports and all keys. If the car is on lease or a loan, first find out how to pay it off.

  2. Prepare the car

Wash it inside and out, empty the boot and fix cheap small things (bulbs, wipers, warning lights). A clean car sells faster and for more.

    In detail: Car interior cleaning

  3. Set the price

Find 5–10 identical cars in listings, compare year, mileage and trim and add a 5–10% margin for haggling.

In detail: How much is my car worth

  4. Photograph the car

In daylight, against a neutral background, from all sides, the interior, the dashboard with mileage, the boot, the engine and any damage. Ideally 15–25 photos.

In detail: How many photos to add to an ad

  5. Write and publish the ad

State make, model, year, mileage, engine, equipment, service history and known defects. Publish the ad on several portals at once.

In detail: How to write a car ad

  6. Reply and arrange a viewing

Reply fast - most buyers get in touch in the first days after publishing. Arrange viewings in daylight, in a public place or in front of your home.

  7. Negotiate

Decide on your minimum in advance. Give discounts for a specific reason (tyres, upcoming STK), not just because the buyer asks for your "final price".

  8. Contract and payment

Sign a written sales contract (kúpna zmluva) in 2 copies with the VIN, mileage, price and known defects. Hand over the car and documents only once the money is in your account or in your hand.

    In detail: Car sales contract

  9. Transfer and PZP

Within 30 days, report the change of keeper at a traffic inspectorate (dopravný inšpektorát) - this is the seller's duty. Then notify your insurer and ask for a refund of unused PZP.

Selling a car step by step

Preparing the car and documents

Buyers decide in the first few seconds - based on the photos and how the car looks at the viewing. Good preparation takes a few hours and tens of euros but often adds hundreds to the price.

Documents to prepare

  • Registration certificate (osvedčenie o evidencii) part I (chip card) and part II (large logbook).
  • Service book and invoices for repairs and servicing.
  • Reports from the last roadworthiness test (STK) and emissions test (EK).
  • All keys, radio code, manuals, second set of wheels.
  • On lease or loan: lender's consent or confirmation of repayment.

What is worth fixing - and what is not

Worth it

  • Thorough interior cleaning and a wash, possibly a cheap upholstery clean.
  • Small things: bulbs, wipers, fluids, warning lights on the dashboard.
  • Valid STK and EK - without them buyers haggle right away or walk off.

Not worth it

  • Expensive repairs right before the sale (timing belt, clutch) - you will not get the full cost back.
  • Repainting larger areas - it raises suspicion of an accident.
  • Hiding defects - if you conceal them, the buyer can claim them for up to 24 months.

How to sell a car urgently - a 7-day plan

Need to sell your car fast but do not want to give it away to a buyout? This is how to fit a private sale into a week.

DayWhat to do
Day 1Get the documents ready, wash and clean the car, get a buyout offer as your floor.
Day 2Photograph the car, find comparable listings and price it just below the market.
Day 3Publish the ad on several portals at once and boost it (top placement).
Days 4–5Keep your phone at hand, reply within an hour, group viewings into one day.
Day 6Lots of views but few calls? Cut the price by 3–5% in one go.
Day 7Contract, payment by transfer or cash within the limit, handover of the car and documents.
If there is still no serious buyer after a week, the price is too high - or it is time for a buyout. A fast sale is mostly about the right price, not where you advertise.
Faster sale

Top placement: your car higher in the results

A boosted ad is shown above the others in the category and in search. For an urgent sale it is the easiest way to get more buyers in the first days.

How top placement works

Viewing and test drive safely

The viewing is where the sale is decided. Be prepared so nothing catches you off guard.

Where and when

In daylight, in a familiar or public place. If possible, do not go to the viewing alone.

Before the test drive

Check the buyer's driving licence and ID. If the car is covered by your PZP, the buyer drives on your insurance - ride along.

Keys and documents

Never leave the buyer alone in the car with the keys. Show the original documents but do not hand them over or send photos with the full VIN to strangers.

Garage inspection

If the buyer wants the car checked at a garage, that is a good sign. Agree on a time and go to the garage together.

Be open

Mention known defects yourself and write them into the contract. You avoid disputes and the buyer will trust you on the rest.

Most common scams when selling a car

Scammers often reach out first - quickly, without a viewing and with a "guaranteed" payment. Know these patterns in advance.

"Receive payment" link

A text or message with a link to a courier or payment page asking for your card details "to receive the money". Receiving a payment never requires card details or a PIN.

Buyer from abroad and a carrier

Buys without a viewing, a carrier will supposedly pick up the car and you have to pay its fee upfront. The carrier does not exist and the money is gone.

Overpayment

Sends more "by mistake" and asks you to return the difference. The original payment is then reversed or was never real.

Fake payment confirmation

A banking app screenshot is not a payment. Hand over the car only when you actually see the money in your account.

Counterfeit banknotes

For cash, meet at a bank and have the money checked and deposited straight away.

Copies of documents and VIN

A request for photos of the logbook "for checking" may be used to clone the car. Showing the VIN at the viewing is enough.

After the sale: transfer, PZP and tax

Until the change of keeper is registered, you are responsible for the car - including speed camera fines. So do not leave the transfer to the buyer.

Transfer within 30 days

The seller reports the change of keeper within 30 days at any traffic inspectorate (§ 116 of Act No. 8/2009 Coll.). The easiest way is to go there together with the buyer right after signing the contract.

PZP and comprehensive cover

Your compulsory PZP insurance ends when the change of keeper is registered. Notify your insurer and ask for a refund of the unused premium. Cancel comprehensive cover (havarijné poistenie) separately.

Tax on the sale

Income from selling a private car that was not part of business assets (obchodný majetok) is generally tax-exempt. Different rules apply to a business car.

Handover protocol

Write down the mileage, number of keys, documents handed over and time of handover. If the car causes damage the same day, you have proof of who had it.

In detail: Vehicle ownership transfer

Most common mistakes when selling a car

  • A gut-feeling price without comparing listings - the car either sits for months or sells below value.
  • Dark or too few photos, a dirty interior, no photo of the mileage.
  • An ad without service history and without known defects.
  • Slow replies - meanwhile the buyer gets another car.
  • Handing over the car before the money is in your account.
  • Leaving the transfer to the buyer - fines and obligations stay with you.
  • Forgetting to ask the insurer for a refund of unused PZP.

Frequently asked questions about selling a car

How long does it take to sell a car privately?

An ordinary car at market price usually sells in 2–6 weeks. Cheaper popular models in a few days, expensive or unusual cars take longer. The right price and good photos speed things up the most.

Is it better to sell a car privately or to a dealer?

Privately you usually get 15–30% more, but you have to handle the ad, viewings and paperwork. A dealer buyout is fast and hassle-free, but for less money. For an older or damaged car a buyout may make more sense.

What is a consignment car sale (komisný predaj)?

You leave the car at a dealer who sells it for you. It remains yours until sold and you get the money only afterwards, minus a commission of usually 3–8%. The sale date is not guaranteed.

What documents do I need to sell a car?

An ID, the registration certificate (osvedčenie o evidencii) part I and II and a sales contract. Buyers will also appreciate the service book, invoices, STK and EK reports and all keys.

Can I sell a car without a valid STK and EK?

Yes, neither the sale nor the transfer requires a valid STK. But the buyer will haggle - often by more than the test would cost - and cannot drive the car on public roads until it passes.

How do I receive payment for a car safely?

A bank transfer is safest - hand over the car only when you see the money in your account, not based on a screenshot. Cash between private persons is allowed up to €15,000. Take it at a bank and have it checked there.

Who does the transfer - the seller or the buyer?

The seller. They must report the change of keeper within 30 days at any traffic inspectorate. The buyer comes along or gives a power of attorney (splnomocnenie) with a certified signature.

What happens to PZP after selling a car?

The seller's PZP ends when the change of keeper is registered. Send the insurer a notice with a copy of the change document and ask for a refund of the unused premium.

Do I pay tax when selling a car?

If you owned the car as a private person and it was not part of business assets, income from the sale is generally tax-exempt. A business car is handled differently - ask an accountant.

Can I sell a car on lease or a loan?

Until it is paid off, the owner is often the leasing company or bank. You have to pay it off first or agree the sale with the lender - usually the buyer pays the balance directly to the lender.

How do I sell a car fast when I am in a hurry?

Price it just below the market, take good photos, publish the ad on several portals at once, boost it and reply immediately. If nothing happens within a week, lower the price or consider a buyout.

How do I sell a car that does not run or was in an accident?

Describe the condition honestly and adjust the price. DIY enthusiasts, garages and parts buyers are interested. If it cannot be sold, you can give the car away for free collection.

All guides to selling a car

We cover each step of the sale in a separate detailed guide.

A fast, well-paid car sale rests on three things: the right price, good photos and quick replies. The paperwork is simple today - a written contract, payment before handover and a transfer within 30 days, which you as the seller take care of.
