Car diagnostics in Slovakia - check engine light, OBD2 and prices

Has the check engine light come on, has the car lost power, or are you about to sell it? A computer diagnostic tells you in minutes where the control unit has logged a fault. Here is what diagnostics reveals and what it does not, when you can keep driving with the light on, what a garage charges and when a cheap OBD2 reader is enough.

What car diagnostics (autodiagnostika) is

A modern car has dozens of control units - engine, gearbox, ABS, airbags, air conditioning. When one of them registers a value out of range, it stores a fault code (DTC) and, for more serious faults, turns on a warning light on the dashboard.

Car diagnostics (in Slovak also autodiagnostika or počítačová diagnostika) means connecting to these units and reading the data. It is done through the OBD2 port - a 16-pin connector, usually under the steering wheel or near the fuse box. In the EU, petrol cars have it from around 2001 and diesel cars from around 2004.

What diagnostics shows

Fault codes

Stored and pending - for example, P0300 means engine misfire.

Freeze frame

Engine state at the moment the fault occurred - rpm, temperature, load.

Live data

Lambda sensor, temperature, pressure and fuel trims in real time.

Readiness monitors

Whether the emission systems have completed their self-tests.

What diagnostics does not show

  • Exactly which part to replace. Code P0171 ("system too lean") can be caused by an intake leak, the air mass meter, the fuel pump or the lambda sensor.
  • Mechanical condition. Worn brakes and shock absorbers, rust, paint condition or oil leaks - that needs an inspection.
  • The car's history. Mileage and number of owners are checked by VIN. VIN check in Slovakia

When to get a diagnostic

  • The check engine, EPC, glow plug or another warning light is on or flashing.
  • The car has lost power, gone into limp mode, jerks, starts badly or uses more fuel.
  • Before STK and EK - so a control unit fault does not catch you out.
  • Before selling - you know what the buyer will find and can fix it or disclose it fairly.
  • When buying a used car - diagnostics belongs to the check before you sign the contract.
  • After a repair - to confirm the fault has not come back.

Check engine light (kontrolka motora): on or flashing?

The yellow (amber) light with an engine outline - called check engine or MIL - reports a fault in engine management or the emission systems. It lights up briefly when you switch on the ignition and should go out once the engine starts. What matters is how it lights up:

SituationWhat it usually meansWhat to do
On, the car drives normallySensor or emission system faultYou can drive, get a diagnostic within the next few days
On and the car has lost powerLimp mode - the unit protects the engineDrive gently, without load, to a garage as soon as possible
FlashingMisfire - unburnt fuel destroys the catalytic converterSlow down, stop safely as soon as possible, do not drive on
Flashing and the engine shakesSevere misfireStop, switch off the engine, call a tow truck
On together with a red light (oil, temperature)Risk of engine damageStop immediately and switch off the engine

Most common causes

Spark plugs and ignition coils, lambda sensor, air mass meter, EGR valve, clogged DPF (diesel engines), catalytic converter, injectors, intake leaks and, on some cars, a loose fuel cap. Sometimes the light comes on after a voltage drop or after the battery has been disconnected.

Do not replace parts blindly based on forum advice - read the code first and have it interpreted.

Other warning lights: red = stop, yellow = garage as soon as possible, green and blue = information.

What you pay and what for

The price difference (€15 vs. €150) usually comes down to what you actually order:

Reading codes

Takes about 10-30 minutes. The garage connects the tool, prints the faults and explains what they mean. Usually €15-50.

Fault finding

The technician's work - circuit measurements, a test drive, component checks. It is charged by the hour: roughly €35-55 per hour excl. VAT at an independent garage, around €50-60 excl. VAT at a franchised dealer. A complex fault can take hours.

Franchised dealer

Has the manufacturer's software - needed for coding, control unit updates and some adaptations. For a routine code read, an independent garage is enough.

What to ask the garage in advance

  • Is it just reading codes, or also finding the cause?
  • Is the price per job or per hour? With or without VAT?
  • Will I get a printout of the faults - on paper or by e-mail?
  • Will you deduct the diagnostics fee if you also do the repair?
  • Will you call me with a cost estimate before the repair?

DIY diagnostics: OBD2 reader

You do not need a garage to read an engine fault. An OBD2 reader is enough:

Bluetooth adapter + phone app

About €15-40. Reads engine faults and shows live data.

Standalone scanner with a display

About €30-100. Works without a phone.

Multi-brand or brand-specific scanner

€100-450. ABS, airbag, gearbox, service resets, some also coding.

Steps

  1. Find the OBD2 port - under the steering wheel, near the pedals or behind the fuse box cover.
  2. Plug in the reader with the car switched off.
  3. Switch on the ignition (no need to start the engine) and pair the adapter with the app.
  4. Read the fault codes and note them down together with the freeze frame data.
  5. Look up what the code means - remember it points to an area, not a part.
  6. Show the code and freeze frame data at the garage - it shortens fault finding. The garage clears the fault after the repair.

What a cheap reader usually cannot do

Read ABS, airbag, gearbox and comfort units, start a DPF regeneration, do service resets or coding. Where the reader stops, the garage starts.

Is it worth it?

If you have an older car and the light comes on now and then, a reader costing a few dozen euros pays for itself on first use. If you have never tinkered with cars, a one-off code read at a garage is simpler.

Before selling: what the buyer will find

A sensible buyer will have the car checked - often including diagnostics. If you do it first, you have the advantage:

Cheap fault

Sensor, spark plugs, a coil → fix it. A lit warning light in the photos or at the viewing knocks more off the price than the repair costs.

Expensive fault

DPF, injectors, gearbox → state it in the ad and factor it into the price. The buyer will find it anyway and haggle harder.

No faults

A diagnostic printout is a selling point. Mention in the ad that the car has no fault codes and show the printout at the viewing.

Car diagnostics in 6 steps

From a warning light to a fixed car:

  1. Notice the symptoms

How the light behaves (on / flashing), when it came on and whether the car drives differently.

  2. Assess safety

If the light is flashing or a red light is on, stop. Otherwise you can carry on calmly.

  3. Read the fault codes

With your own OBD2 reader or at a garage.

  4. Find the cause

Fix a simple fault based on the code; for an unclear code, order fault finding.

  5. Agree the scope and price

Per job or hourly rate, with or without VAT, repair estimate in advance.

  6. Check after the repair

The fault does not return, the light stays off, the self-tests are complete.

Car diagnostics FAQ

How much does car diagnostics cost in Slovakia?

Reading fault codes at a garage costs about €15-50, full diagnostics of all systems €20-60. Fault finding is charged by the hour, usually €35-60 per hour excl. VAT. Prices checked on 20 October 2026.

Can I drive with the check engine light on?

If it is steady and the car drives normally, yes, for a short while - get a diagnostic within the next few days. If it is flashing, the car has lost power or a red light is on as well, stop.

Why is the check engine light flashing?

Most often because of a misfire. Unburnt fuel gets into the exhaust and can destroy the catalytic converter. Slow down and stop as soon as possible.

Can I do car diagnostics myself?

Yes. An OBD2 reader for €15-40 reads engine faults. ABS, airbag and gearbox usually need a more expensive scanner or a garage.

Will diagnostics tell me which part to replace?

No. The code points to an area, and one fault can have several causes. Only measurements and the technician's experience identify the part.

Will the check engine light go out by itself?

If the cause goes away (for example, the fuel cap is tightened), the control unit turns the light off after a few drives. If the cause remains, the light stays on - have it checked at a garage.

Do I have to go to a franchised dealer for diagnostics?

Not for reading codes - an independent garage is enough. A dealer is needed mainly for coding, software updates and some adaptations.

Do I pay for diagnostics if the garage finds nothing?

Yes, you pay for time and equipment. That is why you should agree the scope and price in advance.

How long does car diagnostics take?

Reading codes takes 10-30 minutes. Fault finding takes from one to several hours, longer for intermittent faults.

Will I pass STK and EK with the check engine light on?

A lit engine, airbag or ABS warning light counts as a defect at the inspection. Fix it before your appointment.

Car diagnostics is cheap and quick - reading the codes costs less than a full tank. Do not ignore a warning light, but do not panic either: if it is flashing, stop; if it is just on, calmly head to a garage. Agree with the garage in advance whether you are paying for a code read or for fault finding. And if you are selling, a diagnostic before you post the ad saves you from haggling.
